Depkin`s ManorThe airport is about 20 minutes drive also. The history of Ramava (Depkin’s) Manor The beginnings of Ramava (Depkin’s) Manor date back to the 15th century. The historical name of the manor is Depkinshof and it has originally been a parsonage. From year 1723 the manor belonged to the senior pastor of city Riga B.Depkin. Several other Baltic German pastors have lived and worked there. Famous representative of Livonian Enlightenment, the Baltic German man of letters Garlieb Merkel (1769 – 1850) spent his last 40 years in Depkinshof. The picture by J.Brotze (German- born teacher, keen drawer and student of Baltic history; 1742 – 1823) and a layout of the manor dated with year 1770 both demonstrate that the estate once consisted of ten buildings, mostly log constructions. Till nowadays only the wooden 19th century dwelling house has survived. The former owners of the manor The manor was established in the 15th century In 1723 the manor was devolved to the senior pastor of city Riga B.Depkin. In the course of 18th century, the manor has been owned by the pastor’s relative burgomaster Depkin and in 1795 inherited by the master of ceremonies. In 1804 the manor was sold to J.Port, the senior pastor of city Riga. In 1808 Garlieb Merkel (1769 – 1850), obtained the manor. He spent the rest of his life there and was buried in Katlakalns cemetery. During the period of years 1920-1940, the manor dwelling house was run by the research establishment of the Agriculture faculty of University of Latvia “Ramava”. After the Second World War the manor housed the Designing engineer filial office of USSR Ministry of Agricultural mechanical engineering. Later it was also used as an apartment house. In 1996 the manor house became the property of Kekava municipality. After a case of severe vandalism in the house in 1998, the board of Kekava municipality suggested to knock the building down and make use of the land for industrial purposes. However, due to intervention of State Inspection for Heritage Protection the manor building was secured and completely renovated.
